Title I

Title I is a program born out of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) that passed under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. The original legislation aimed to close the achievement gap between students from low-income families in urban or rural, and students from middle class suburban school systems. The Title I program changed significantly in 2001 when President Bush following an act of congress signed the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The NCLB Act increased accountability from both teachers and students by using standardized tests to measure the academic growth of all students.

Free and Reduced Price Meal Eligibility

Code of Federal Regulations, 7 CFR Part 245 outlines eligibility requirements for free and reduced price meals. Based on files provided by the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) Bethune Middle School was categorized as a Provision 2 school. With over 80% of the student population meeting the eligibility requirements, all students on our campus are eligible to receive free lunch.

To learn more about Title I and the services available, please call (323) 541- 2016. The Title I Coordinator Mr. Erwin will be happy to entertain all questions regarding the academic success and overall well-being of Bethune Middle School students.
